about us
our mission
Scarlett’s Plan was created with a simple but powerful promise: to ensure that no beloved pet is left behind when life changes for the person who loves them most.
We provide free, thoughtful rehoming support to seniors and people with terminal illnesses who are facing the difficult decision of parting with their pets. Whether someone is moving into a retirement home, entering hospice care, or planning for the future, we help them find a loving, permanent home for their animal—one that feels like family.
What makes Scarlett’s Plan different is that we don’t rely on shelters or foster systems. Instead, we carefully guide each pet from the only home they've ever known directly into their second forever home, so they never feel lost, abandoned, or forgotten. We never charge adoption fees—because love shouldn’t come with a price tag.
our story
Our founder, Layla, has loved animals for as long as she can remember. As an adult, she has spent years caring for the stray cats in her Las Vegas neighborhood by setting food out every night, arranging safe trap-and-release spay/neuter efforts, even opening her garage and building shelters to keep them safe from the heat and cold.
In January 2024, a frail, dirty calico wandered into her garage and curled up on a pile of bags, refusing to move. Layla gently brought her inside, named her Scarlett, and gave her food, water, and a quiet room to rest in where she settled in immediately.
Scarlett’s true colors quickly shined through where she revealed herself to be a mouthy, tiny but feisty little girl with plenty of spunk who loved to play. Though she was only with Layla for six months, passing away unexpectedly in July 2024, she spent her final days safe, warm, and deeply loved.
Scarlett’s short time in Layla’s home was a powerful reminder: even helping just one animal can change everything for the animal and for the human who loves them.
After Scarlett’s passing, Layla began researching where the need was greatest. What she found was a heartbreaking gap: there were very few services to help seniors and people facing terminal illness plan for their pets' futures. Many were left worrying about what would happen to their beloved animals when they could no longer care for them.
Scarlett’s Plan was born out of that need. It’s our way of honoring Scarlett’s feisty, bold spirit and making sure every pet gets to feel safe, cherished, and truly at home no matter what changes life brings for the people who love them.
“Scarlett reminded me that even one act of kindness can completely change an animal’s world. Scarlett’s Plan is for every pet whose world shifted due to no fault of their own, and for their person searching for peace, knowing their best friend will be loved and safe no matter what.”
— Layla Carswell, Founder
