Scarlett’s Plan supports seniors and individuals facing terminal illness by helping them find loving, permanent homes for their pets—while ensuring the original owner has the final say in choosing the adoptive family.
At Scarlett’s Plan, our goal is to keep pets and their people together for as long as circumstances allow. In most cases, animals remain in their familiar home while we help find a new family. Occasionally, the pet’s person has already passed or entered care, and a loved one is providing temporary support during the transition.
our adoption process
1. Apply
When you see a pet you’re interested in adopting, reach out to the volunteer listed in the pet’s profile. Share your contact information and a little bit about yourself and your home environment. From there, the volunteer will schedule a time to chat.
2. Scarlett’s Plan Interview
In this first conversation, the volunteer will tell you more about the adoptable pet and ask questions to get a better sense of your lifestyle and expectations. You’ll also receive any available medical information and vet records that the pet’s current owner or caretaker has provided. If the volunteer feels like it could be a good match, they’ll pass your details along to the pet’s family.
3. Owner or Caregiver Interview
Next, you’ll speak directly with the person who knows the pet best—whether it’s their original owner or a trusted loved one now caring for them. This step allows them to ask their own questions and connect with you personally before deciding whether to move forward.
4. Meet & Greet
If you’re selected for the next step, a meet-and-greet will be arranged so you can spend time with the pet and their family or caregiver. This is your opportunity to ask about their daily routine, favorite foods, habits, and personality—to ensure it’s the right fit for everyone.
5. Adoption Decision
If the family or caregiver chooses you as the pet’s new home, you’ll be notified—either directly by them or through the volunteer you’ve been working with. At this stage, we’ll provide you with our Adoption Guide to help you prepare for a smooth transition.
Since Scarlett’s Plan facilitates the connection but is not a party in the adoption agreement, the pet’s current family and the adopter will coordinate transportation and handoff details together.
6. Keeping in Touch
Many families appreciate occasional updates about how their beloved pet is settling in. While it’s not required, staying in touch can bring peace of mind and a sense of closure to those who had to say goodbye.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, adoption through Scarlett’s Plan is completely free.
