how it works

Scarlett’s Plan provides a free service to help seniors and terminally ill people arrange homes for their cats and dogs. Rather than housing animals in a foster system, we arrange for them to move directly from their home into a second forever home.

Our goal is for the animal to stay with their human up until the very last day to provide comfort and companionship to their human. We often help in situations where a senior is moving into a retirement home or care facility due to declining health, a person has been diagnosed with a terminal illness or a person has unexpectedly passed away and the family is unable to adopt their pet.

While we work to arrange second forever homes and vet each applicant, the owner of the animal has the ultimate decision of who adopts their beloved pet.

Requirements for Scarlett’s Plan

Our rehoming service supports seniors and individuals with terminal illnesses by helping them find loving, permanent homes for their pets before they transition into retirement communities, care facilities, or pass away. We also assist in cases where a pet needs to be rehomed after an owner’s passing, or when a well-meaning family member has taken in the animal but the home isn’t the right fit.

All of our adoptable pets must come from the care of a senior or a person facing a terminal illness who is no longer able to look after their beloved companion due to health-related circumstances, or who has passed away. Each pet must be spayed or neutered and have a safe, temporary place to stay while we work to find their second forever home.

We assist with rehoming cats and dogs of all ages and known health conditions. However, our service is not designed for medical emergencies or cases involving severe neglect. Please note that Scarlett’s Plan is not a shelter, and animals cannot be surrendered directly to us.

Application Process & Adoption Fees

Our rehoming service operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Once an application is submitted, it is reviewed and placed on our waitlist. Applicants are contacted as soon as a volunteer becomes available to assist.

While we strive to assist in every situation that meets our criteria, we are a small organization with limited resources. We kindly ask that you review our requirements above before submitting an application.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, adoption through Scarlett’s Plan is completely free.
